For my upcoming feature I wanted to make sure I included different points of views from different types of surrogacies. I had previously spoke to Annabel about her current journey via gestational surrogacy but wanted to speak to someone who has gone through the traditional surrogacy route.
I came across Kim (also known as 'the travelling surrogate’) on Instagram. After reaching out to her, we agreed on a day to meet where I could get to know about her surrogacy experiences. After taking the train from Bournemouth to London Waterloo, we met on the top floor of Starbucks at the station.
Kim loves to travel, hence the name of ‘the travelling surrogate’ and after her first holiday knew she wanted to travel the world.
Kim is a traditional surrogate- so she uses her own egg. She was very open with the reason why she chose to go through with the traditional route of surrogacy.
“My mum was a traditional surrogate. The way she explained it to me as a five-year-old, is the way that stuck with me. It was that if she didn't get pregnant that month, it would just be a period, she would just lose that egg and it wouldn't be used to so why not put it to good use or create a child for someone who really wants one. And to me that makes so much sense.
“As I've done more research into it, as I've become friends with loads of other surrogates, the IVF process, the embryo implantation process, all the drugs and hormones, it just doesn’t seem pleasant at all. I think doing it in the most natural way, doing what your body knows how to do anyway just keeps it really simple.” Kim explained.
Kim is currently on her second surrogacy and is due to give birth late May. She hopes to go to New Zealand in the summer to help her friend move there and continue travelling around the world.
