Last week, I attended PET’s conference- ‘How much change do we want? Updating fertility, embryo, and surrogacy law’.
The conference had been moved online, due to train strikes, so all the speakers could still attend. Whilst very interesting and eye opening, some parts had me completely lost.
I particularly focused on the section where they discussed surrogacy law and what the proposals would actually mean.
After the conference, I wanted to understand the laws better, so I reached out to senior associate Bethan Carr, of Penningtons Manches Cooper. Last year, Bethan was nominated for Surrogacy Professional of the Year at the National Surrogacy Awards.
She was incredibly helpful in explaining the laws and what that could mean for the future of surrogacy.
Bethan is very fond of surrogacy and knows what it means for couples wanting to have children of their own.
“I think it's wonderful. I know that lots of people have very strong views.” Bethan said.
“I think someone being willing to carry a child for somebody else is a is a wonderful thing and actually, the relationships that I've seen people have through surrogacy are amazing. It's somebody that they might not have known before, naturally, but now they're always then part of the family in some way- they're always this kind of special person. I think it's brilliant.” She added.
Bethan is just about to go on maternity leave, so it was great to talk to her and get a better insight to the laws within surrogacy.
