Probably one of the most interesting people I had the chance to interview was Kim Cotton.
Kim was the first surrogate in the UK and the work she has done for surrogacy cannot be understated. She was also an inspiration for Jill- my surrogate.
It was incredible to hear about her story and the work she has done. She is a reminder of how strong women are and what an amazing thing surrogacy is.
Kim told me about the reasons why she decided to become a surrogate.
“For love and for money.” Kim said.
“I married my childhood sweetheart heart, and everything was a bit easy for us. We took for granted that we can have children- when I wanted children, I had them. I thought what a lovely thing to do is share my fertility with someone less fortunate than myself.
“I could also help my little family. It was a six and a half grand which in those days wasn't a massive amount of money, but that was good enough. The couples you do it for want to be able to say thank you. Otherwise, you're indebted to this person for the rest of your life. This is you've done something wonderful for me and now I'm going to reward you the only way that I can.” She explained.
Kim, while taking a bit of a step back, continues to work for her agency, COTS and help so many couples achieve their dream of being parents.
