BLOG 7: TALKING TO 'SURROGACY CONCERN' FOUNDER, HELEN GIBSON

It was vital for my project that I got a different perspective of surrogacy. After speaking to Alan White at Surrogacy UK a few weeks ago he sent me different pieces of information regarding surrogacy. One of the links sent included this specific campaign against surrogacy that started just after the law reforms were published in March this year.

I sent an email to Helen, telling her about my project and she was more than happy to talk to me about her campaign and why she is doing it. Helen has been involved in feminism activism for 20 years. She wants to spread awareness of how women's bodies can be commodified, and the risks to women that exist in our society of exploitation.

Her voice is important to the project to create balance and add a different layer to the feature I write.

“What I wanted to do with surrogacy was sort of make sure that both sides of the debate were heard and give a space and a voice to people to have the discussion because you'll see in the media, there's a sort of pro surrogacy slant and we don't hear many stories about the negatives. I thought for a long time that, that was quite strange, because I knew enough about surrogacy to know that certainly in Britain there's actually more to it.

“I knew of cases of regret, and quite a number of women who regretted what they've done, and have grown up children born of surrogacy, who struggled as a result. So, I thought, well both sides aren't being heard and in a democracy that's really dangerous.” Helen told me.

Helen is progressing her campaign and hopes that Surrogacy Concern continues to build traction and provides another side of the story.
